September 2014 - Night time closures of Town Wall Street

2014-07-31 14:54:56

Best advice is to avoid using the A20 if coming to morning training or pickup up from evening training during September.....

Project Reference: A20 through Dover remedial work

What are they planning to do?

LaFarge, on behalf of the Highways Agency, will be resurfacing sections of the A20 in Dover between the Eastern Docks roundabout and the Western Heights roundabout. These repairs follow the 2008 resurfacing scheme and need to be carried out to repair defects and will prolong the life of the carriageway. The Port of Dover will be upgrading the Union Street and York Street junctions during 2015 and repairs at these locations will be carried out as part of the upgrades.

When will work start and how long will it take?

Work will take place from Monday 1 September until Saturday 27 September, weather permitting, and will take four weeks to complete. Work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am, each night.

Why do we want to do this work?

Soon after the road surface was originally laid in 2008, as can very occasionally occur, a structural issue was identified with the surface on various sections of the A20. Investigations have shown that remedial works will provide a long term solution and also improve road safety.

How will we carry out this work and how will it affect you?

Sections of road will be closed between the Eastern Docks roundabout and the Courtwood interchange in phases, as detailed below. Changes will also mean that:

  • a reversal of the current one way flow on Fishmongers Lane, Mill Street and East Cliff Road to maintain local access.
  • there will be no access from the A20 on to A256 Woolcomber Street.
  • there will be no access to and from the A20 to various side roads, including Snargate Street, York Street, A256 Woolcomber, Mill Lane, Russell Street, East Cliff, Marine Parade, Athol Terrace, Union Street, Wellesley Road, Old Folkestone Road, Elizabeth Street, and the Viaduct.

Road users will follow fully signed diversion routes during each closure.

The works will be carried out, as currently planned, as follows:

Section 1 – Monday 1, Tuesday 2 and Friday 12 September: The westbound carriageway will be closed between Eastern Docks Roundabout and York Street with a diversion via the A2, A256, Barnet Road/Maison Dieu Road one way system, Castle Street and King Street

Section 2 – Monday 1, Saturday 20 and Saturday 27 September: The eastbound carriageway will be closed between Woolcomber Street and the Port of Dover roundabout, including Eastern Docks roundabout, with a diversion via the A256 and A2. Westbound road users will be diverted via the designated left turn for the A20.

Section 3 – Friday 5 September to Monday 8 September: The westbound carriageway will be closed between the York Street roundabout and Limekiln roundabout with a diversion via the B2011, and A256.

Section 4 – Monday 1, Wednesday 3, Thursday 4 and Monday 15 September: The eastbound carriageway will be closed between the Prince of Wales roundabout and Eastern Docks roundabout with a diversion via the B2011 , A256 and A2.

Diversions will be in place from Maison Dieu Road via Castle Street and via the westbound A20 for traffic joining at the Western Heights and Limekiln roundabouts to join the diversion at the Courtwood interchange.

Section 5 Monday 1, Monday 8 and Sunday 14 September: The westbound carriageway will be closed between the York Street roundabout and Limekiln roundabout with a diversion via the A256 and B2011.

Section 6 Monday 1, Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 September: The A20 will be closed in both directions between the Cortwood interchange and Prince of Wales roundabout with diversions in place via the B2011 and the A256

All diversions will be clearly signed. We have looked into various options for this scheme and have chosen this approach to minimise disruption to road users and residents. These diversions are suitable to carry all vehicles and have been agreed with Dover District and Kent County Councils, Kent Police and the Port of Dover.

Work of this nature does generate disruption and inevitably a certain amount of noise.  Efforts will be made to minimise this wherever possible; for example, by completing noisier activities in the earlier part of the overnight works period. We would advise you to follow the diversion signs and not any satellite navigation systems as they may not be aware of roadworks; it is advisable that you plan your journey and allow extra time.

If you have any queries about the works or want to discuss them further, please do not hesitate to contact the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or email ha_info@highways.gov.uk.

Thney will be sending weekly email updates out for this section of work as it is subject to change. Please contact the Highways Agency us if you would like to receive any updates regarding the work.
